Manipur Extends Mobile Internet Suspension in Nine Districts
Imphal, Nov 29: In a preventive move, the Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services in nine districts, including the troubled Jiribam district, for two more days. According to a Home Department order, the ban, now effective until 5:15 p.m. on December 1, aims to prevent the misuse of social media for spreading hate speech and inciting unrest.
Precautionary Measures Amid Law and Order Concerns
The suspension order was issued by Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, citing the potential for anti-social elements to exploit social media to disrupt peace. While no major incidents have been reported since November 18, the precaution follows recent unrest, including violence on November 16 triggered by the discovery of six bodies in Jiribam.
The affected districts are:
- Imphal West
- Imphal East
- Bishnupur
- Thoubal
- Kakching
- Kangpokpi
- Churachandpur
- Jiribam
- Pherzawl
Impact on Daily Life and Education
The government has eased curfew restrictions in six districts to allow students to attend schools and universities, which resumed regular classes on Friday after a two-week hiatus. While attendance remained slightly low, it is expected to normalize soon.
Curfew relaxations also permit residents to procure essentials like food and medicines. However, gatherings and rallies still require prior approval from authorities.
Recurring Suspensions and Gradual Easing
Manipur has faced repeated mobile internet suspensions since November 16 following violent outbreaks. Despite the ongoing ban, efforts to restore normalcy continue, with educational institutions reopening and curfew restrictions gradually easing.
