Mobile Internet Back Online in Bangladesh After 10 Days

Mobile internet services in Bangladesh resumed on July 28, 2024, following a 10-day suspension. This restoration marks a significant step toward normalcy after the country experienced widespread violence over proposed changes to the government job quota system.

Internet Access Returns

Users of Robi, Grameenphone, Banglalink, and other operators reported regaining internet access around 3 p.m. The restoration came as a relief for many, including businesses and individuals reliant on mobile internet for daily activities. Minister of State for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak announced that all users would receive 5GB of free internet for three days as a compensatory measure.

Cause of Shutdown

The government initially cut mobile internet on July 18 to prevent the spread of misinformation during the violent protests. These protests were driven by demands to reduce the quota system that reserved 30% of government jobs for relatives of 1971 War of Independence veterans. The violence led to the death of over 100 people, with significant property damage, including a fire at the Department of Disaster Management building, which disrupted broadband services temporarily.

Government’s Response

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina defended the government’s harsh measures, including a curfew and shoot-on-sight orders, to restore peace. The apex court has since reduced the veterans’ quota to 5%, with 93% of civil service jobs now based on merit and 2% reserved for minorities and disabled individuals.

Social Media Regulation

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has summoned representatives from major social media platforms to discuss measures against the spread of fake news. These meetings are scheduled before July 31, and decisions on social media access will follow these discussions.

Path to Normalcy

With mobile internet back online, Dhaka is slowly returning to routine. Traffic is increasing, and banks, garment factories, and other businesses are gradually reopening. The restoration of internet services plays a crucial role in stabilizing the situation and supporting economic activities.
