Cause of Shutdown

These protests were driven by demands to reduce the quota system that reserved 30% of government jobs for relatives of 1971 War of Independence veterans. The violence led to the death of over 100 people, with significant property damage, including a fire at the Department of Disaster Management building, which disrupted broadband services temporarily.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina defended the government’s harsh measures, including a curfew and shoot-on-sight orders, to restore peace. The apex court has since reduced the veterans’ quota to 5%, with 93% of civil service jobs now based on merit and 2% reserved for minorities and disabled individuals.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has summoned representatives from major social media platforms to discuss measures against the spread of fake news. These meetings are scheduled before July 31, and decisions on social media access will follow these discussions.
