TRAI’s New Guidelines for Mobile Number Porting from July 1
Users cannot port their mobile number if they replaced their SIM card in the last seven days.
Highlights
- TRAI introduces new rules for SIM card porting.
- The regulation takes effect on July 1.
- Users can initiate porting by sending an SMS to 1900.
New TRAI Mobile Number Porting Guidelines
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced new amendments to mobile number portability (MNP) regulations last week. Starting July 1, users cannot port their mobile number to a different telecom operator if they have swapped or replaced their SIM card in the last seven days. This update aims to combat SIM swap fraud in the country.
Key Changes in MNP Regulations
The new rules, part of the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2024, introduce a critical change: a seven-day restriction on porting if a SIM card has been replaced or swapped. This measure seeks to curb fraudulent porting activities.
Additional Rejection Criteria for UPC:
- The request for a Unique Porting Code (UPC) will be rejected if made within seven days of a SIM swap or replacement.
- This UPC is essential for transferring a mobile number from one telecom operator to another.
How to Initiate Porting
Users can switch their service provider without changing their mobile number using the MNP facility. To start the porting process:
- Send an SMS in the format PORT<ten-digit mobile number> to 1900.
- Receive a UPC via SMS.
- Use this UPC to place an MNP request.
Background and Implementation
TRAI first introduced MNP regulations in 2009. The latest amendment, effective from July 1, aims to enhance security and prevent fraudulent activities associated with SIM swaps.
