Bharti Airtel launched Priority Postpaid in May 2026, the first commercial 5G network slicing service in India, aimed at giving postpaid customers a more consistent connection when the network is busy. Airtel said the service uses 5G slicing to reserve network capacity dynamically for postpaid users, without blocking or slowing any app or website.

Key facts

  • Launched: May 2026 (one report dates it to May 19)
  • Service: Priority Postpaid, based on 5G network slicing
  • Plans: ₹449 to ₹1,749 a month; existing postpaid users upgraded automatically
  • Airtel told DoT on May 25 that the service complies with TRAI rules

What is 5G network slicing?

Network slicing lets an operator split one 5G network into separate virtual lanes with different performance. Airtel uses a slice to give its postpaid customers more dependable speeds during peak traffic.

The net neutrality question

The launch started a debate with regulators and rivals about whether priority lanes fit India's net neutrality rules. Airtel says it does not block, throttle or favour any application. Reliance Jio has said slicing is compatible with existing rules, and research firm Omdia says both Airtel and Jio are pursuing consumer slicing services.

What it means for retailers and users

For postpaid users, the change came automatically with existing plans from ₹449. For retailers selling Airtel connections, Priority Postpaid is a new reason to move prepaid customers to postpaid.
