India had about 43.4 crore 5G users by April 2026, roughly 40% of mobile subscribers, according to Ind-Ra figures reported by TelecomTalk. Jio and Airtel hold nearly all of them. Vi is still expanding city by city, BSNL has not launched commercial 5G that we can confirm, and satellite internet is awaiting final clearances.
This guide explains where each network stands, how to check whether 5G works for you, and what is coming next. Last checked: November 2, 2026.
Where each operator stands
| Operator | Position | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Jio | About 28.5 crore 5G users, June 2026 | Largest 5G base, unlimited 5G from ₹198 and ₹349 plans |
| Airtel | Part of the 43.4 crore total | Unlimited 5G from ₹349, 300GB fair use limit |
| Vi | Rolling out by city | 5G only where deployed, smaller coverage |
| BSNL | 4G rollout continuing | No confirmed commercial 5G launch |
5G user counts come from different sources and dates, so treat them as a guide. Our monthly TRAI reports, such as the June 2026 data, show how the wider subscriber race is moving.
How to check if 5G will work for you
You need three things: a 5G phone, a plan that includes it, and coverage where you are. In your phone’s network settings, check that a 5G option is listed and selected. Then look at the operator’s app for coverage, and test at home and at work, because 5G can vary from one street to the next.
Plans matter too. On Jio and Airtel, unlimited 5G generally starts at the ₹349 level, as our recharge plans guide explains. Airtel’s offer treats use above 300GB in 30 days as possibly commercial, and Vi’s ₹2,475 plan has a similar cap.
Vi’s 5G rollout
Vi is adding 5G in stages, most recently 33 more cities in Kerala. Its promoter has put in ₹4,730 crore, meant mainly for 4G and 5G in priority circles. If you are a Vi user, check whether 5G has reached your area before buying a new phone for it.
BSNL: 4G first, 5G later
BSNL is building a network using Indian equipment from TCS, Tejas and C-DoT, designed to be upgraded to 5G. It had 93,511 sites on air by October 2025 and about 96,000 by March 2026, against a target of 1 lakh. A further 26,238 sites were ordered in July.
5G launch dates have been reported many times and have slipped. We found no confirmation of a commercial launch as of November 2, 2026, so treat any date you see with care. BSNL’s challenge is also active use: only about 56% of its base was active in June. Better news for rural users may come from its early talks with Starlink on backhaul, though nothing has been signed.
Home broadband over 5G
Fixed wireless uses 5G to bring broadband to a home with no fibre cable. It is the fastest-growing part of the market: JioAirFiber has over 1.4 crore users and made up over 75% of Jio’s broadband additions in a year. On TRAI’s narrower count, Jio had 91.14 lakh 5G fixed wireless users at the end of June, and Airtel 38.21 lakh.
Check data limits before choosing. Jio’s ₹2,222 pack was reported with 3.3TB on fibre and 1TB on AirFiber. If fibre reaches your home, it is usually the better option, and Airtel’s 100 Mbps plans show what bundles are on offer.
Satellite internet in India
Starlink says it is ready to launch and has built over 20 gateway sites in India, but as of late October it had no commercial launch, and we found no confirmed Indian prices. Reports say spectrum has not been assigned and its FDI application is pending, while a Bloomberg report that the launch was on hold was denied by SpaceX, according to NewsBytes and others.
In September, India’s Digital Communications Commission approved satellite spectrum rules, with operators reported to pay 5% of revenue, or 4% for a rural focus. Jio’s SpaceFiber and Eutelsat OneWeb are also awaiting clearance. Satellite will suit remote places first, not replace mobile data in cities. Any Starlink price you see today is a guess.
When networks fail
In disasters, the Department of Telecommunications can order intra-circle roaming, which lets users connect to another operator’s network at no extra charge. It did this for four Arunachal Pradesh districts after floods in June. Operators also strengthen networks for big events, as Airtel did in Odisha for the Rath Yatra.
Why this matters for mobile shops
Customers often buy a 5G phone expecting 5G to work everywhere. Check coverage at their home first, and explain the plan requirement. In areas with strong 5G, fixed wireless leads can be worth passing on. Do not quote launch dates for BSNL 5G or Starlink until they are officially announced.
